This third and final part of my GaBoom Swap Diary would have been up earlier but for one thing: the postal system. However, now that I’ve got a package in my hands (steady on) I can disclose if the community are as trustworthy as they might seem – the promise of a game in good condition with no proof of said condition can be a big one to fulfil.
Has GaBoom, and my postman, delivered? Find out in part three of my GaBoom Swap Diary!

A trade! We have a trade! Yesterday’s GaBoom Swap Diary covered adding some games to the newly relaunched UK game swapping website and waiting for some recommendations to pop up. I’ve received word back from one user that he’s happy to take an old copy of Buzz! off my hands in exchange for The Saboteur, a game I thought I had played but had, in fact, completely forgotten about. At least I’ll get the chance now.
Finalising a trade is easy-peasy through GaBoom, and as it turns out it’s cheap as chips too. Read on for Part Two of my GaBoom Swap Diary.

GaBoom is a UK-based game-swapping service launched last July. Since then, it has accumulated a tidy number users, and as of very recently it has relaunched with a brand new virtual currency system and automated notifications for when you and somebody else have games you both wish to trade. In short, it offers the ability to trade directly with gamers who want the games you don’t for next-to-nothing. All sounds great, right? GaBoom asked me to test their new site, and I agreed to give it a go. Read on for the first part of my GaBoom Swap Diary! Read More »

Of all the things I expected to be doing at Eurogamer Expo, meeting and chatting to Drs. Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, behind closed doors and before their Old Republic presentation, was not one of them. Together forming the professional partnering unofficially known as The BioWare Doctors, Muzyka and Zeschuk are responsible — alongside their teams at BioWare’s various studios across the world — for some of the best RPGs seen in the past two decades, including Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age and Mass Effect.
So imagine how I felt sitting down with them for half an hour to chat; not about BioWare, not about the games, but about them, what drives and inspires them and how exactly games like those mentioned above come about.
Stick around; this is a real treat.

Stocks and shares: they’re usually a boring thing responsible for causing financial meltdowns across the world and occasionally bringing in a small fortune following a timely gamble. Very, very occasionally I’m pretty interested in watching them, the investor predictions and seeing how they affect stuff. Generally, they’re a good marker of how exactly a company is doing, if they’re floated publicly (i.e. stocks and shares can be traded).
So, uh, with Nintendo’s Tokyo Game Show presentation over, let’s have a look at the history of Nintendo’s shares over the past decade or so. It might be interesting, and will contain some speculation of my own.

There’s no denying that the latest Need for Speed title, The Run, features some mild moments of controversy. Such as, er, getting out of the car. Driving across the entirety of the USA, there are moments where quick time events — gah! — rear their ugly heads and detract from the racing action. But are they as bad as they sound? Sitting down for a chat with the game’s Executive Producer, Jason DeLong, we were able to pick at things like this along with improvements to Autolog and what it was like working with Battlefield 3‘s Frostbite 2 engine.
Head on over for the extensive interview! Need for Speed: The Run is out on November 18th, and you can read hands-on with the game here.

In Feature,Gamescom 2011,PlayStation 3,Xbox 360 on August 22, 2011 by jonfaec Tagged: Battlefield 3, Calibur11, gamescom, Gears of War

When it comes to console customisation, you tend to think of vinyl sticker kits that are laboriously and delicately attached to your consoles with utmost precision. Get it wrong, and it’s a guaranteed peel-off in order to try again. On the upside, they’re easy to customise. Then again, when you think of PC customisation, you think of detailed, intricate and frankly amazing bits of properly realised 3D sculpture, which become the envy of all who see it in action. Y’know, if by “in action” you mean “it’s attached to the system while that system is running.”
But you get the point.
You might see where I’m going with this. Why aren’t consoles customisable to the same degree as PCs? A US company called Calibur11 wants to answer that question, and at Gamescom I was able to see if they’d answered it properly.

In Editorial,Feature,Featured Content,PlayStation 3,SG Review on October 29, 2010 by jonfaec Tagged: SingStar, SingStar Dance, SingStar Guitar

SingStar‘s a pretty hefty casual brand in the world of PlayStation: for the past 6 years it’s proven most popular with pretty much any girl between the ages of 10 and 16 (and probably a few drunken older ones too). The PS3 SingStore has pretty much rendered the need for further expansion discs null and void, unless there’s a pretty good reason to put them out there.
Sony’s managed to find a couple of good reasons in the form of SingStar Guitar and SingStar Dance, two new games in the karaoke roster which include ways of involving everyone that simply sat around while you strutted your stuff with a mic in front of the telly: namely, strumming a guitar or dancing around like a mongrel. The question is, are they worth your time and your cash?
NB: This article does not feature me singing. Relax and return from your shelters.
